Online team building for remote teams that actually works

Remote socials fail for a predictable reason. Here is what to do instead of another quiz.

Why the quiz does not work

A quiz is a room full of people taking turns to be silent. One person reads, everyone else waits, and the people who were quiet in the office are quiet here too.

What remote teams are missing is not entertainment. It is the experience of solving something together at the same time.

What changes in an escape room

Everyone is in the same 360° room at once, and everyone can see each other’s cursors. There is no turn-taking, so there is no queue to speak. Within ten minutes people are talking over each other about a padlock, which is exactly the point.

It also gives your quieter colleagues somewhere to be useful without having to perform.

Running it for a team

One ticket covers a team, so buy one per team of four to six and run them in parallel on separate calls. Bring everyone back into one call afterwards and compare times.

An hour of game plus fifteen minutes of talking afterwards is the whole session. Do not schedule two hours; the timer is 60 minutes and people have things to do.

The practical checks

Laptops or desktops, not phones. Chrome or Safari up to date. A connection you would take a video call on - we test on 20 Mb. Headphones help with a couple of audio puzzles.

Send the link in the calendar invite, not in the chat five minutes before. There is no fixed start time, so a team who are all late can still play.
